Drop Dead Delicious
July 30, 2009Just watched the first episode of Drop Dead Diva from Lifetime. Delightful!!
As you may or may not know, I am a tv snob. I don’t particularly like the programs we have here in the States. They truly are quite bland and tedious in comparison with what’s outside of our borders. So it was truly surprising when I actually liked something we have here.
Truth-be-told, I only agreed to watch because of Margaret Cho. I am a big fan of hers and I’d give anything she’s on at least a gander. So when I saw a commercial with her, I knew I had to at least check things out.
I had no idea what the premise of this show was about. The title was a bit vague until after the first 5 minutes into the first episode, when I went “ohhh, I seee”. Interesting, interesting…
The show is kindof like Legally Blonde meets Hairspray meets Ally McBeal. The plot so far is a no brainer, pretty much things turn out rosy by the end of the hour. What I did find interesting was the fact that the show held my interest for the entire hour, and I’m actually interested in watching to see what happens next.
Of course there are your stereotypical characters, like the lasviscious libidoed boss, the back-stabbing co-worker, and the trust sidekick. All that’s missing is your cookie-cutter gay man (but the role seems to be filled by the ditzy blond model).
The show has its moments, no shortage of fat jokes and stereotypes. But it’s not done in a mean way. The cheez-whiz is a classic. Overall I give it an 8.5/10. There’s room for improvement and I hope it does. Check it out!
